Fried Cheese
Fried Cheese: A Delectable Meatless Main Course
If you’re seeking a unique meatless main course that’s both mouthwatering and simple to prepare, look no further than fried cheese. This delightful dish features thick slices of semi-hard cheese (such as Provolone) breaded and fried to golden perfection. The result? A gooey, stretchy indulgence that’s sure to satisfy.
Recipe (4 servings):
Ingredients:
- 4 slices of semi-hard cheese (about 1/2 inch thick), such as Provolone, Monterey Jack, Mozzarella, Swiss Gruyere, Edam, Gouda.
- 2 eggs
- Splash of milk
- Bread crumbs
- Oil for frying (canola or vegetable)
Directions:
- Prepare the Egg Wash: In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs and a splash of milk to create the egg wash.
- Coat the Cheese: Coat each slice of cheese with bread crumbs, ensuring they are fully covered.
- Dip in Egg Wash: Dip both sides of the breaded cheese slices into the egg wash, ensuring they are evenly coated.
- Recoat with Breadcrumbs: Carefully coat each cheese slice once again with breadcrumbs, ensuring they are completely covered. This step is crucial to prevent any cheese from leaking out during frying (total of 2 times in egg wash).
- Fry the Cheese: In a frying pan or fryer, heat the oil to medium-high heat. Once hot, carefully place the coated cheese slices into the oil and fry until golden brown on all sides, about 2-3 minutes per side.
- Serve Immediately: Remove the cheese from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil. Serve immediately while the cheese is hot, gooey, and irresistibly stretchy.
Serving Suggestions:
- Pair the cheese with cubed boiled potatoes, mashed potatoes, or crispy French fries for a satisfying meal.
- Don’t forget to add a dollop of my home-made Tartar sauce on the side for an extra burst of flavor.
Whether you’re looking for a quick and easy weeknight dinner or a crowd-pleasing appetizer, fried cheese is sure to delight. Give this recipe a try and prepare to be amazed by its cheesy goodness!
Don’t forget to pair it with soup or treat yourself to a delectable dessert like a cookie or brownie.
