These Hot Cocoa Thumbprint Cookies combine rich, fudgy chocolate cookies with a fluffy marshmallow frosting center, just like a cozy mug of hot cocoa in cookie form. They’re festive, fun to make, and always a hit on cookie trays and holiday dessert tables.

📝 Ingredients

For the Chocolate Cookies:

  • 1 cup (226 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt

For the Marshmallow Frosting:

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • ½ cup marshmallow fluff (or crème)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1–2 tbsp heavy cream or milk (as needed)

Optional Toppings:

  • Mini marshmallows
  • Chocolate shavings or chips
  • Crushed peppermint candies
  • Holiday sprinkles

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1. Make the cookie dough
In a large bowl, cream butter and sugars until light and fluffy using an electric mixer. Beat in egg and vanilla.
In another bowl, whisk flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Gradually mix into wet ingredients until combined.

2. Chill
Cover dough and chill for 30–45 minutes for easier handling.

3. Shape & bake
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment.
Roll dough into 1-inch balls and place 2 inches apart. Bake for 8–10 minutes.

4. Make thumbprints
As soon as cookies come out, gently press a thumb or spoon into the center of each cookie. Let cool completely on wire cooling rack. (I use the back of 1/4 measuring tsp – to prevent burning my thumb) 🙂

5. Prepare frosting
Beat butter until smooth. Add powdered sugar, then marshmallow fluff and vanilla. Beat until fluffy, adding cream as needed.

6. Fill & decorate
Pipe or spoon frosting into centers. Add toppings if desired.

Tips for Perfect Thumbprints

  • Press the indent right after baking while cookies are soft.
  • If cracks form, gently pinch dough back together.
  • Don’t overbake — cookies should look just set.

🔄 Variations

  • Peppermint cocoa: Add ½ tsp peppermint extract to frosting.
  • Dark chocolate: Use dark cocoa powder for richer flavor.
  • Mocha: Add 1 tsp instant espresso powder to dough.

🛠️ Troubleshooting Box – Hot Cocoa Thumbprint Cookies

Cookies spread too much
➡️ Dough may be too warm. Chill longer (45–60 minutes) and make sure butter wasn’t overly soft.

Cookies are dry or crumbly
➡️ They were likely overbaked. Pull them when edges are set but centers still look soft — they firm up as they cool.

Thumbprints cracked badly
➡️ Dough may be too cold or dry. Let it sit at room temp for a few minutes before rolling, and gently smooth cracks with your fingers.

Centers puffed up after baking
➡️ Press the thumbprint again immediately after baking while cookies are still warm.

Frosting too runny
➡️ Add more powdered sugar, 1–2 tablespoons at a time.

Frosting too stiff
➡️ Beat in cream or milk, 1 teaspoon at a time, until fluffy.

Marshmallow frosting melting
➡️ Be sure cookies are completely cool before filling.
