Ingredients

Mashed Potato Topping

  • 2 lbs. potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • ½ cup milk (or cream)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Meat Filling

  • 1 lb. ground beef (or lamb)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

  1. Cook potatoes:
    Peel, cube and boil potatoes in salted water until fork-tender. Drain, mash with butter and milk, and season with salt and pepper. Set aside.
  2. Prepare the filling:
    Heat olive oil in a large oven-safe skillet over medium heat. Add onion and carrots; cook until softened.
  3. Brown the meat:
    Add ground meat and cook until browned. Stir in garlic and tomato paste; cook 1 minute.
  4. Simmer:
    Pour in broth, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper. Simmer 5–7 minutes until thickened. Stir in peas.
  5. Assemble:
    Spread mashed potatoes evenly over the meat mixture. Use a fork to create texture on top.
  6. Bake:
    Place skillet under broiler or bake at 400°F for 15–20 minutes until golden and lightly crisped.
  7. Serve:
    Let rest 5 minutes before serving.
