Ingredients

2 ½ pounds (1.1 kg)Yukon Gold potatoes, thinly sliced
3 tablespoons (42 g) butter
3 tablespoons (24 g) flour
2 cups (480 ml) whole milk
1 cup (240 ml) heavy cream
1 cup (100-120 g) shredded Gruyère cheese (optional but delicious)
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

1. Preheat Oven

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter.

2. Prepare the Cream Sauce

In a saucepan melt the butter over medium heat.

Add the garlic and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant.

Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute to create a roux.

Slowly whisk in:

  • whole milk
  • heavy cream

Repeat with the remaining potatoes, sauce, and cheese.

4. Bake

Cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes.

Remove the foil and bake another 20–25 minutes, until the top is golden and the potatoes are tender.

5. Rest and Serve

Let the dish rest for 10 minutes before serving. This helps the sauce thicken beautifully.
