Fried Cheese: A Delectable Meatless Main Course

If you’re seeking a unique meatless main course that’s both mouthwatering and simple to prepare, look no further than fried cheese. This delightful dish features thick slices of semi-hard cheese (such as Provolone) breaded and fried to golden perfection. The result? A gooey, stretchy indulgence that’s sure to satisfy.

Recipe (4 servings):

Ingredients:

  • 4 slices of semi-hard cheese (about 1/2 inch thick), such as Provolone, Monterey Jack, Mozzarella, Swiss Gruyere, Edam, Gouda.
  • 2 eggs
  • Splash of milk
  • Bread crumbs
  • Oil for frying (canola or vegetable)

Directions:

  • Prepare the Egg Wash: In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs and a splash of milk to create the egg wash.
  • Coat the Cheese: Coat each slice of cheese with bread crumbs, ensuring they are fully covered.
  • Dip in Egg Wash: Dip both sides of the breaded cheese slices into the egg wash, ensuring they are evenly coated.
  • Recoat with Breadcrumbs: Carefully coat each cheese slice once again with breadcrumbs, ensuring they are completely covered. This step is crucial to prevent any cheese from leaking out during frying (total of 2 times in egg wash).

  • Fry the Cheese: In a frying pan or fryer, heat the oil to medium-high heat. Once hot, carefully place the coated cheese slices into the oil and fry until golden brown on all sides, about 2-3 minutes per side.

My wife is Czech and this is a very popular dish there. The first time she made it I was like ‘What’?? But it is really good. Dip a piece of the fried cheese in the homemade tartar sauce (tatarska in Czech) and your mouth will be very happy. This is the ‘big brother’ of mozzarella sticks and way better

This was very tasty! The combination of the melted cheese with the tartar sauce and the potatoes is well balanced.
